EGO’S 2020 WINNERS OF THE “MOST OUTSTANDING GRADUATE STUDENT” AWARD HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED!

Huge congrats are in order! Please join EGO in celebrating and applauding MA and Ph.D. students Hayley Salo and Lauren Fusilier, who were named EGO’s “Most Outstanding Graduate Students” for 2020 by their peers. This award honors students who have demonstrated exceptional departmental or community involvement, strong peer mentorship and relationships, and/or scholarly engagement in their courses and beyond. It is presented annually during the spring semester and honors more than just excellent teaching and writing center tutoring. Like Hayley and Lauren this year, it celebrates people who have a unique ability to inspire those around them.

The recipients of this year’s prize will each get a $100 check and a certificate of acknowledgment, as well as a feature on EGO’s homepage.

The following are some of the fantastic comments made by their peers on their nomination forms:

MOST OUTSTANDING MA: Hayley Salo

“Throughout this unusual year, Hayley has remained dedicated to her studies, colleagues, and department. In addition to successfully completing her MA coursework and thesis, she taught a section each of ENGL 101 and 102, worked as Dr. Lutz’s research assistant, presented at CCCCs, applied to/was accepted into PhD programs, and submitted an article for publication that received a ‘revise and resubmit’ decision. She supports her cohort by being a study buddy and attentive listener and by contributing to the group’s collective teaching resources. Lastly, she served the English department as co-representative in GSC and her fellow MAs as the MA Liaison in EGO. In both cases, she worked to ensure that the voices of all English students were heard by other students, faculty, and administration.”

MOST OUTSTANDING PhD: Lauren Fusilier

“Lauren F. is a great mentor and colleague. She is always willing to help out and is very understanding, kind, and supportive. She is also a very dedicated and hardworking student. Lauren has served as my guide through this program and, without her, I would be floundering and failing. It is her work which I have attempted to meet the standard of, as more than one professor has referred me to her scholarship as a model for my own. Lauren has been more than helpful and knowledgeable about resources on campus, research, as well as how to develop as a scholar. Lauren has played a massive role in building community here at UofL. Her work with EGO has brought many new students in. She has shown a willingness to set time aside to mentor those around her, even as she juggles editing the new newsletter of the Composition Studies journal, teaching, working as the Assistant Composition Director, her coursework, and her responsibilities as EGO Vice President. It is Lauren who has made me feel like a part of the UofL community. She absolutely deserves all of the recognition for serving as a guide through this difficult, isolating year.”

Once again, congratulations, and let us all strive to be as encouraging and motivating to one another as these two have been.
